Posts can be translated for the reader. When a creator writes in a language you do not read, you can have the post shown in yours and follow what they are saying. The same works the other way round: what you write can be read by people who use another of the 11 languages, so you can post in your own language without worrying.

Translation is for posts. Live conversations, such as a room, a call or a Talk to Stranger chat, happen in the language the people choose to speak, which is why the third section below gives tips for them.

From reading a post to a real conversation

Start in the feed, which you can browse without an account. Pick a post in a language you do not read, have it translated and see what the creator is sharing. Photos and videos need no translation at all, which makes the feed a natural place where languages meet.

With a free account you can like the post, leave a comment and reply to other people under it. Follow the creators you enjoy, and their next posts come to you.

When a conversation grows, move to private messages: one-to-one chat with photos, videos and voice notes, plus audio and video calls. A voice note lets the other person hear how you say things. In a call you simply speak the language you both choose, so settle on one you both know.

Write so that everyone understands you

A few habits make conversations across languages smoother, with or without translation.

Keep sentences short and say one thing at a time. Avoid slang, jokes built on wordplay and long strings of abbreviations, which are the first things to get lost when a text is translated.

Ask simple, open questions such as “What is the weather like where you are?” or “What are you cooking today?”, and answer what the other person actually wrote instead of guessing.

If you know a few words of their language, use them: a greeting or a thank-you in their language is always welcome. Animated emojis and photos can carry a mood when words fall short. Above all, be patient: a reply may take longer when someone is reading in a second language.

Practice a language while you scroll
